Every piece of clothing travels a long way before it hangs in our wardrobe. This project deals with the various stages of the textile chain. Step by step, the viewer gains insights into the production of clothing and its impact over time.

We developed a concept that breaks down the complex topic of textile production to the essential points. The information is conveyed clearly through appealing colours and illustrations. The design was made for the print medium as well as for a website.

Transmedial information visualisation

For each of the seven stations that make up the textile chain, one or two pages were designed in landscape format. Each station consists of a short introductory text, the most important information on the topic and corresponding illustrations that support the content.

Digital

On the website the individual stations are explained on the main page. Subpages provide more in-depth information on the respective topic.

Illustrations

My main task was to create illustrations for each station and theme. For each illustration, I researched and simplified the function or mechanism. They visually support what is being explained.

The highlight of all the illustrations is the fashion timeline. From Roman antiquity to the present day, the fashion of six centuries is depicted.

Icons

As an orientation aid and design tool, we have developed icons that match the thematic content. The main icons represent the seven stages of the textile chain.

Typography

We have chosen IMB Plex Sans. Its clean, sans-serif look emphasises the technical theme of textile production without distracting from the main content.

Colours

Blue is the main colour of the project and represents the technical aspect of the theme. The other colours harmonise with the blue and are partly graduated in intensity to ensure a more universal application.
